Review:Ask for Janice, Farringdon

Ask for Janice,50-52 Long Lane, Farringdon, London, EC1A 9EJ

Breakfast is apparently the most important meal of the day and where better to break my fast than this little gem of a restaurant on Long Lane, Farringdon.

The decor is light, bright and simple yet effortlessly stylish.

The metal stools reminded me of science lessons at school and in the corner a very comfy looking sofa where I can imagine grabbing a paper and whiling away the hours with a crossword and a coffee.

The menu offered a whole array of tempting breakfast options from toast, freshly made crumpets and pancakes to more substantial offerings such as baked eggs and house cured treacle bacon with eggy bread.

We ordered free range poached eggs on toast and the baked eggs with merguez sausage, roasted peppers and yoghurt as well as some extra toast on the side as you can never have enough sourdsough?!

The baked eggs with spicy sausage in the hearty tomato stew were scrummy and with a huge wedge of fresh sourdough to dip, I was in heaven.

The poached eggs (ordered well done) were perfectly cooked just as desired and served with a lovely salad of lambs lettuce.

Lovely touches of Maldon sea salt in a little pinch tin and the cutlery served in a variety of jugs and pans really added to the fabulous casual design of this restaurant and bar.

The coffee, sourced from Coleman coffee roasters, was really good and also available to go which certainly seemed popular with the working folk coming in and out. I also hear that the crumpets fly off the shelves for early morning breakfasts, as soon as the doors open at 7.30am. This was a shame as it meant there weren’t any left for us!

Great place that you may not know is there but a real find and I definitely need to go back and taste all the many gins I saw sitting on their bar shelves… I would love to see how this venue transforms at night.
